This is the first of four episodes where we have invited special guests and students from summer courses I teach at Canisius College. Students in these classes are graduate teacher candidates on the verge of student-teaching and/or newly inducted teachers in health and physical education. Today, we have asked special guests and students ahead of time to review articles regarding physical literacy so we can discuss how this construct specifically connects to physical education and local school communities as a whole.
Therefore, Dr. Ramsey and I are both very excited to introduce one of the foremost experts on this topic--Dr. David Chorney. Dr. Chorney is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Education, Department of Secondary Education, at the University of Alberta. Dr. Chorney has been working in post-secondary education for the past 20 years. Prior to becoming a professor, he worked as a high school teacher for 7 years, teaching exclusively physical and health education.
David’s active research program focuses on physical education teacher education (PETE); curriculum theorizing in physical education, Physical Literacy as it relates to teacher education as well as technology integration within the teaching of physical and health education. David’s teaching is dynamic and engaging and he devotes much time to ensuring that his classes are relevant, meaningful, inspiring, and challenging. He is well respected as an outstanding, informed teacher educator at the provincial and national level and in 2014 was awarded the Rutherford Award of Excellence in undergraduate teaching, the University of Alberta’s most prestigious teaching award.
