#088 Kerbey Lane Culture with Rose Ann Garza
Manage episode 463700298 series 3440800
Rose Ann Garza, is the Chief Human Resources Officer for Kerbey Lane. Kerby Lane is a restaurant that was started in 1980 in Austin, Texas. If you’ve been to Austin, you’ve probably been to Kerbey Lane. During Rose Ann’s time at Kerbey Lane, the organization has more than doubled in size and has won several prestigious awards related to their impact on the community and on team members.
In this episode, I sit down with Rose Ann to explore what it truly takes to build and sustain a thriving company culture. With 18 years of leadership experience in a fast-growing, family-owned restaurant brand, Rose Ann shares practical strategies for scaling culture, fostering team engagement, and ensuring core values remain strong—even as a business expands.
So, whether you're leading a growing team or looking to refine your company’s culture, this conversation is packed with insights on how to operationalize your values, create meaningful employee benefits, and lead with both strategy and heart.
Here are some of my takeaways!
- Culture Scales with Intentionality – As your business grows, maintaining core values requires consistent leadership and clear cultural guardrails.
- Benefits Should Reflect Employee Needs – Customizing benefits, like food allowances or flexible perks, ensures your team feels valued in ways that matter most to them.
- Community-Driven Leadership Creates Loyalty – Kirby Lane’s Kirby Kindness initiative strengthens both internal culture and brand reputation by investing in local nonprofits.
- Mentorship Can Be Agile – Instead of long-term, formal mentorship, project-based or short-term guidance can be more effective for skill development and leadership growth.
- You can think of different teams or locations as a Microculture – Just like each Kirby Lane location reflects its local community, your teams may need tailored approaches to engagement and leadership.
If you know any CEOs or founders who are currently building a people-first business that attracts top talent and creates lasting impact I’d love to have them as a guest on this podcast.
And, if you have not gone onto Apple Podcasts and followed the show please do that now. I appreciate you each so much. Thank you for listening and I’ll talk to you next week!
