The first episode in our series celebrates our grandmother's kitchens and the life lessons they taught us through their cooking.

My great-grandmother (Nana) was Spanish. English was her second language. With only an eighth-grade education, she learned about life through raising her family and showing love through her kitchen and her cooking.

Her specialty was a pot of pink beans with chunks of bacon dripped into her homemade tortillas with a slab of churned butter. She served them with grilled tri-tip on her little kitchen table. To this day, Nana's beans are a weekly staple in the Higgins house.

Franny Higgins (my mom) describes how memorable and impactful the time she spent in the kitchen with Nana was to her own life.
