Dr. Megan: "The teenager is saying no and doing this by going off on their own and having experiences with their peers, rather than with their parents -pushing them away through words and action. And that is why I think it's just so similar and so hard for the parent, because in both cases you've been parenting this little one for a year and a half, and we're their world. They saw nothing but you. They wanted nothing but you. And then it stops. And that's a loss for us. And we resist that. We resist loss, because it's painful, it hurts. And then we kind of adjust and they separate very, very slowly until they're about 12. And then there's this big explosion again. And you're wondering, what just happened to my kid?"
