The life-altering importance of periocular surgery in pets
Manage episode 446688568 series 3382848
In people, removing creases around the eyes is usually done via a cosmetic procedure dubbed a “nip and tuck.” But in animals, periocular surgery — or surgery around the eye — is usually an essential procedure performed to improve the animal’s quality of life.
Some dogs and cats’ eyelids roll inward, causing their eyelashes to rub against the eye’s surface. It’s an extremely painful condition that can permanently damage vision and lead to blindness.
Another common problem is “cherry eye,” which refers to inflamed glands bulging from the inner corner of the eyes. Drooping eyelids also affect certain canine breeds, preventing complete eye closure. In these cases, periocular surgery can alleviate pain and save the animal’s sight.
