October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so there’s no better time to talk about breast cancer prevention and breast health. Today’s guest is functional breast-cancer surgeon Dr. Jennifer Simmons, one of the country’s top breast cancer surgeons for 17 years before transitioning to functional medicine. She is the CEO of Real Health MD.

Breast cancer is becoming more common in the U.S. due to many environmental factors, not just genetics. In fact, most women who get breast cancer have no family history of it, and mammograms can’t prevent it. It can impact any woman at any age and there’s no typical pattern.

American women are at greater risk because of how we eat, drink, move and sleep. We’re living in an increased toxic environment -- there's more blue light, stimulation, over-consumption, obesity, diabetes and autoimmunity. All of these things are recipes for breast cancer, because at the root of breast cancer is inflammation.

Dr. Simmons recommends that we stop drinking out of plastic water bottles and drink filtered water, eat a plant-based diet and get nourishing sleep. We need to come in contact with far less chemicals by simplifying our cleaning and cosmetic supplies.

She also recommends getting rid of fragrance candles and nonstick pans and limiting processed foods. These tips may not be doable for everyone, but it’s important to do the best you can in your environment. Little changes can be transformative over time.
