When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. In this second part of this six episode series focusing on the Story of the Bible as told through six acts, this episode is all about the second act: the Fall, covering Genesis 3-11, and what it means for the human vocation and God's presence moving forward in the story.
After intros and coffee talk (0:00-5:03), the guys recap the story so far, and they discuss some key concepts to keep track of as we trek through each act of the story (5:04-8:22). They then kick off their discussion of Act 2 and the Fall, starting with why it's called "the Fall" in the first place (8:23-10:07). They then move on to talk about what's going on with the two trees in Genesis 3, and what literary role the serpent plays in the story (10:08-12:18). Next, they discuss why Adam and Eve were told not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and how it was a concern of timing rather than it being a test. They also touch on what images would have come to the minds of the original audience where they thought about the snake. They also take a moment to discuss the immediate consequences of the Fall (12:19-19:20). They then track the storyline of the human vocation as of Act 2, and how humanity decided to define the human vocation for themselves and that we still have our vocation, but it's just a harder task now (19:21-24:22). Next, they talk about the four cycles of sin and grace in the narrative of Genesis 3-11, and what purpose they serve in the overall story. They also briefly discuss what our vocation is now in light of the Fall, as well as how "be fruitful and multiply" was a blessing from God, not a command (24:23-34:23). They round off their discussion by talking about how Act 2 ends on a cliffhanger, and conclude with a discussion on how to live today in light of this act, and how Act 2 forms the trajectory of the rest of the story.
