(0:36-18:04) Question #2: Can you clarify your comment that the Old Testament sacrifices were not precursors to Jesus, and is it a slippery slope to say that the Israelites performed sacrifices just because the surrounding nations did so? This episode wastes no time jumping right where we left off in the last episode (so, for the coffee portion, refer to the last episode). This episode mainly focuses around hypothetical/devil's advocate (pun intended?) questions from Jordan, and the various responses in relation to the topic of Hell. This episode kicks off running with the question - "What about people that don't believe in Jesus but also don't have themselves as the center of their life? Or good people that haven't heard about Jesus?" - and the guys kick around and develop this throughout the whole episode. Does goodness need a reference point? Also, a discussion of subjective vs. objective morality. 22:04-36:27 - Could God have created a world without evil in it as a possibility? Is this the best possible world that God could have created? 36:28-42:27 - The emotional side of the problem of evil and the problems that we experience everyday in the midst of anger, depression, sadness, and chaos around us, and how God deeply cares for the problem of evil. This episode focuses on whether Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, as depicted in the book of Jonah. After intros and coffee talk (0:00-4:59), the guys begin by giving their initial thoughts and opinions as they answer the question of whether Jonah was really swallowed by a whale or not (5:00-10:15). They then talk about the historicity of Jonah and who he was in real life and when he lived, as well as a brief overview of Israel's history as a nation. They also talk about whether or not this book was actually written by the historical figure of Jonah or not. They also discuss the parabolic nature of the story, and they walk through examples in the Old Testament of descriptions of Israel getting swallowed up by Babylon. They also spend some time discussing the whale itself (10:16-30:55). They then shift into talking about what the book of Jonah means for us today, and they touch on the sign of Jonah and how Jesus identified Himself with Jonah. They conclude by talking again briefly about whether or not Jonah wrote this book, and what the message of the book as a whole is (30:56-48:14). Thanks for listening! On this episode, the guys discuss the Old Testament law, and what we are supposed to do with it today in our 21st century lives. After intros and coffee talk (0:00-5:47), the guys jump into their discussion about the Law, talking about the role that the Law plays in the Bible, and the specific role that the Law played for Israel in the Old Testament (5:48-12:04). They then move into a conversation about the way that "law" worked in the ancient Near East, and the difference between how they saw law vs. how law operates in our society today (12:05-19:58). They next get to talking about the nature of ancient Near Eastern law, and how law was viewed and used in their culture and worldview, and how the OT Law separates itself from it's surrounding culture (while also being contained within it) due to the nature of it being situated in the covenant. They talk, too, about how the OT LAW is both legal wisdom and stipulations of a treaty (19:59-34:51). Next, they talk about how to understand the culturally-rooted nature of the OT Law, and how we should use the law in our Act today (see the Story of the Bible series for more on this). They also discuss whether the OT Law was better than the surrounding cultures (34:52-43:03). They conclude the episode discussing how we should approach the law today, what it means for us in the 21st century, and how we should use it, ending on how Jesus talked about and used the law (43-04-57:15). In this episode, the guys dive into a hot topic discussion on whether the Flood in the Bible was truly a global flood or not. After intros and coffee talk (0:00-2:58), the begin their conversation on the Flood with a discussion of ancient and modern worldviews (2:59-6:11). They then talk about the use of hyperbole in the Bible, and how hyperbole is used in the Flood narrative (6:12-13:20). Next, they bring science into the discussion and talk about how science fits into the conversation of the Biblical Flood (13:21-20:13). Following that, they move into a talk about the possibilities besides a global flood that the Flood could have possibly been, and some scientific consensus around different options. They also talk about the creation themes of Genesis 1 that carry over into the Flood narrative, and briefly touch on what the text is talking about when it says that God was "grieved" by the state of humanity in the story (20:14-33:24). They conclude their conversation talking about whether or not everybody was truly killed in the Flood, and end in a short discussion on the nature of the rainbow at the end of the story (33:25-39:42). In this sixth and final episode of The Story of the Bible series, this episode focuses on the Act 6 New Creation that Scripture points towards and how one day this reality will come into being, as all things are made new and God's Kingdom fully permeates all of creation. After intros and coffee talk (0:00-4:53), the guys recap the story leading up to the Act 6 New Creation, including the storyline of the human vocation and God's sacred space (4:54-12:53). After this recap, they kick off their discussion of New Creation and how Scripture paints the picture of the end of this first story but the beginning of the next, starting with Revelation 21's picture of the new heavens and the new earth, and how we are called to be people here and now that point to the New Creation and the way that the world will one day be when Jesus reigns in full (12:54-20:44). Next, they talk about the influence of Platonism on the early church and the Greek philosophy idea that our physical bodies are inherently bad, but how the Bible supports the idea that our bodies are very good (20:45-22:16). They then discuss what it means when Paul says that in Christ we are already a new creation, and what Paul means when he says that Jesus was the first-fruits of New Creation. They also discuss what it means to be people of New Creation now (22:17-29:28). After briefly talking about the confidence we have that the entire storyline of the Act 2 Fall won't take place again (29:29-32:23), they also touch on how it's our job now to herald and announce the coming of the King - Jesus (32:24-34:28). Finally, they conclude with a conversation on how we communicate and represent the end of the story in our lives today and how we are called to learn the language of New Creation and speak it here and now, ending with a quote by C.S. Lewis on what to expect in the New Creation. To learn more, visit us at www.thegoodbrewpodcast.com and follow us on social media @goodbrewpodcast. Thanks for listening! In this fifth part of this six episode series focusing on the Story of the Bible, this episode focuses on the church and the part that we are playing - and writing - today in our lives. After intros and coffee talk (0:00-4:57), the guys recap the story so far, leading into this Act 5 of the church, including the storyline of the human vocation and the theme of sacred space. They discuss, too, what Jesus meant when He said that it was better that He leave and the Holy Spirit comes, and why that is important (4:58-13:11). Next, they talk about how we are actively writing our part in the Story today, and how God is forming a people for the Act 6 New Creation. They also discuss the relationship between Israel and the church, and the importance the fruits of the Spirit and the Great Commission have for our lives today (13:12-22:14). They then move into a conversation about how we are in a holding pattern in Act 5 as we work towards New Creation, and that what we do is critical and it matters (22:15-24:47). They next talk about the difference between building the Kingdom vs. joining in with what God is doing in the world already (24:48-26:59). Finally, they discuss the inherently intuitive nature of what Jesus calls us to do in our lives and why we don't need to live for just a moment of glory for Jesus, but rather that we need to live our lives day to day and watch Jesus at work around us in the ordinary and the mundane. They also talk about why evangelism needs to take place in your everyday rhythms of life, concluding in a conversation about the need to be tuned in to God's presence and to be faithfully present in the lives of those around us (27:00-37:32). Welcome to our first Roast and Grind episode! These are what we are calling our Question and Discussion episodes. You’ve asked questions, and we want to discuss them and talk through them, so this is the format that we are going to use as we move along this journey. After Intros (0-1:26), the guys dive right into the questions: Question #1 - (1:27-4:40) - What was all the talk about Egypt and the snake in Episode 7, as Adam and Eve hadn’t been to Egypt at that point? Question #2 - (4:41-10:41) - Someone mentioned in Episode 7 that the snake wasn’t Satan. If it wasn’t Satan, then who was it? Question #3 - (10:42-23:12) - If a prayer of salvation (as discussed in Episode 4) isn’t actually mandated by Scripture, then how exactly do we come to salvation and how do we know if we have actually come to Christ? What is the dividing line between being saved and being lost? Thank you for listening to this first Roast and Grind episode! If you have questions, send them to us on social media @goodbrewpodcast or email your questions to info@thegoodbrewpodcast.com To learn more, visit us at www.thegoodbrewpodcast.com and follow us on social media @goodbrewpodcast. In this fourth part of this six episode series focusing on the Story of the Bible, this episode focuses on the relatively short but extremely crucial narrative of the gospels - the Act 4 story of Jesus. After intros and coffee talk (0:00-6 :05), the guys recap the story so far, leading up to Act 4, rehashing, too, the storyline of the human vocation and sacred space, as well as the cliffhanger that ended Act 3, along with the longing expectation leading into Act 4 and how it's always been God's desire to dwell with and among us (6:06-16:47). They then begin talking about Act 4, starting with a discussion of the genealogy that opens up Matthew's gospel narrative and how it ties in with the jubilee year idea in the Old Testament, and how Jesus saw Himself and His vocation in direct alignment with the story of Israel and the idea of a needed representative of Israel (16:48-24:45). Next, they discuss how Jesus wasn't the only one in history that people saw as the realization of the Messianic hope, and how Jesus carried forth the Kingdom narrative established in 2 Samuel 7. They also talk about John the Baptist's role in the narrative, and how the idea of the temple ties in with Jesus' story (24:46-31:59). They then move into a talk about how Jesus is taking the story and re-centering and reforming it around Himself, including pointing out the parallels between Jesus' story and Israel's story. They also talk about how Jesus is the true, faithful Israelite (32:00-36:05). Following that, they talk about the vocation that Jesus saw Himself carrying out, and how Jesus understood Himself, as well as how Jesus' contemporaries would have understood Him. After spending a little more time on the other Messiah movements in history besides Jesus, they discuss the resurrection and what purpose it serves in the story as it launches the Kingdom of God (36:06-43:50). They begin to round down the conversation talking about where Act 4 leaves us as we head into Act 5, and how the victory has been won, New Creation (Act 6) has dawned, but there is still work to be done now. They also give thoughts on how we are to live in light of Jesus and this particular act of the story, and how Jesus has influenced the history and story of the world and humanity. They conclude with a discussion of how it's important to remember that Jesus did not show up in a vacuum but rather in the midst of a story, and they give possibly the best title for a coffee blend that you may have ever heard (43:51-52:50). In this third part of this six episode series focusing on the Story of the Bible, this episode focuses on the large chunk of the Bible that is the story of Israel. This large act starts in Genesis 12 and covers the rest of the Old Testament. After intros and coffee talk (0:00-3:59), the guys recap the story so far, including the two main themes of the human vocation and sacred space, leading into Act 3 - Israel (4:00-9:46). They then begin their discussion of Act 3, starting with the situation at the beginning of Genesis 12, as the Biblical story zooms in on Abraham and his family, and they talk about why God called Abraham in the first place. They also discuss why sometimes the Old Testament can be difficult to understand and read, but how it is such a critical part of the story to be familiar with in order to fully understand Jesus (9:47-16:07). Next, they talk about how the Act 3 story of Israel ties into the vocation of humanity, and they discuss the correlation between the call of humanity back in Act 1 with Abraham's call in Genesis 12, along with Jesus' Great Commission at the end of Act 4 (16:08-24:10). They then give a shortened version of the story of Israel as told in the Old Testament, giving a brief overview of each section, from the Pentateuch through the narratives of the kings (Samuel and Kings), culminating in the prophets. They highlight the key moments of the Exodus and the Exile, touching also on the Law and Israel's role as a light to the nations. They also discuss how the story of Israel is a journey of the human vocation, and touch on Act 3's relationship with Act 1 and the garden, as well as the Act 2 Fall (24:11-44:07). Next, they move into a discussion on how the story of Israel ends on a cliffhanger, in similar fashion to Genesis 3-11, and how Jesus is set up in the story of Israel (44:08-46:50). They then talk about the destruction of the temple in the Old Testament, and how devastating this was for the Israelites, and how this ties in with the theme of sacred space, bleeding into the New Testament and Act 4. They also discuss how, in a sense, we are still in exile from our true home and purpose (46:51-50:59). Closing down the discussion, they talk about the hopeful expectation at the end of Act 3 that there will be someone who will take up the mantle of Israel, for Israel and the nations, on behalf of God, concluding with their takeaways and the overall importance of the story of Israel (51:00-57:53). This episode features the Cueva de los Llanos blend from Counter Culture Coffee.…
In this second part of this six episode series focusing on the Story of the Bible as told through six acts, this episode is all about the second act: the Fall, covering Genesis 3-11, and what it means for the human vocation and God's presence moving forward in the story. After intros and coffee talk (0:00-5:03), the guys recap the story so far, and they discuss some key concepts to keep track of as we trek through each act of the story (5:04-8:22). They then kick off their discussion of Act 2 and the Fall, starting with why it's called "the Fall" in the first place (8:23-10:07). They then move on to talk about what's going on with the two trees in Genesis 3, and what literary role the serpent plays in the story (10:08-12:18). Next, they discuss why Adam and Eve were told not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and how it was a concern of timing rather than it being a test. They also touch on what images would have come to the minds of the original audience where they thought about the snake. They also take a moment to discuss the immediate consequences of the Fall (12:19-19:20). They then track the storyline of the human vocation as of Act 2, and how humanity decided to define the human vocation for themselves and that we still have our vocation, but it's just a harder task now (19:21-24:22). Next, they talk about the four cycles of sin and grace in the narrative of Genesis 3-11, and what purpose they serve in the overall story. They also briefly discuss what our vocation is now in light of the Fall, as well as how "be fruitful and multiply" was a blessing from God, not a command (24:23-34:23). They round off their discussion by talking about how Act 2 ends on a cliffhanger, and conclude with a discussion on how to live today in light of this act, and how Act 2 forms the trajectory of the rest of the story. To learn more, visit us at www.thegoodbrewpodcast.com and follow us on social media @goodbrewpodcast. Thanks for listening! This episode again features the Cueva de los Llanos roast from Counter Culture coffee.…
This Pour Over episode stems from our episode 5 conversation on The Rapture, when the guys discussed Matthew 24. This Pour Over episode stems from our episode 6 conversation, which began the series on the Story of the Bible as told through six acts: Creation, the Fall, Israel, Jesus, the Church, and the Consummation. This episode kicks off a 6 episode series focusing on The Story of the Bible as told through a six act structure: Creation, Fall, Israel, Jesus, the Church, and the Consummation. This episode focuses on the first act, Creation, covering the Genesis 1 and 2 ideal where God's presence permeates, as well as establishing the human vocation (both things that will be tracked in particular throughout this series). After intros and a coffee segment that you don't want to miss (0:00-5:14), the guys introduce the six act structure and how we can use this structure to read and understand the grand story of the Bible better (5:15-9:07). They talk briefly about why we are using these six acts in particular, and how this structure provides the macro level view of the story (9:08-10:00). Next, they discuss why Genesis 1 and 2 are so crucial to the story, instead of them just being arbitrary beginnings to the Bible. They discuss what purpose Genesis 1 and 2 serve in the story, and how they paint an ideal for the world. They also discuss how the garden was good, but not perfect, as the goal of the creation project is to move forward and take it somewhere (10:01-13:50). They then talk about the difference between Genesis 1 and 2, and how chapter two establishes the functionality of the blessing that was given in Genesis 1 (13:51-16:20). Next, they shift into talking about the Garden of Eden and whether it is a place that can actually be found (16:21-21:10). They then discuss the human vocation as laid out in Genesis 1 and 2, and what it means to rule and reign. They also talk about why humans are called to partner with God in the creation project, and how this partnership sets the stage for the rest of the story of the Bible as God sees His original plan through (21:11-29:16). Entering into a conversation about the Kingdom of God, they talk briefly about heaven and the overlap between heaven and earth in Genesis 1 and 2 (29:17-35:00). They round off their discussion talking about how the human vocation is a priestly vocation, how we can fulfill our human vocation in our lives today by reflecting God, and what Act 1 says about God (35:01-46:01). Finally, they conclude by summarizing Act 1 and giving examples of how the Act 1 ideal looks like nowadays (46:02-52:38). In the first of the Pour Over series, this first Pour Over episode stems from the "Did God Make the World in Seven Days?" conversation. Pour Overs are short mini-episodes of content that each derive from a much longer conversation. This conversation snippet covers thoughts such as why there is such a push to reconcile scripture and science, what is meant when we say that the Bible is an inspired book, and how history is always reported through a particular lens. In this episode, the guys discuss the theology of the rapture (or, as we like to call it at The Good Brew, the Velocirapture). After intros and coffee talk (0:00-4:26), they briefly talk about some of their own personal histories with rapture theology (4:27-9:02), and then give a history of the theology and what exactly it teaches (9:03-12:06). Further, they discuss the rapture framework of dispensationalism and spend awhile discussing some of what dispensationalism entails (12:07-24:08). They then turn to the Bible to read through and discuss the popular rapture passages and break down what is truly going on in each passage and the context of each passage and how they tie in to the Old Testament imagery in Genesis and Exodus (24:09-41:03). After briefly talking about the unification of Israel and the church and what it means to be the true people of God (41:04-47:56), they give a few further thoughts on the history and rise of dispensationalism through the years (47:57-50:33), and conclude with some ending thoughts and key takeaways (50:34-57:04). In this episode, the guys (minus a one-week absent Jordan) tackle the gospel. After intros and a breakdown of this week's coffee (0:00-3:30), they discuss the literary genre of the gospels (3:31-6:42). After that, they jump into what most people think about when they hear the word "gospel" (6:43-9:42). Philip gives an overview of the story of the Bible leading up to Jesus' arrival on the scene, and they spend more time talking about that story (9:43-14:21), leading into the importance of understanding that story in order to grasp the gospel (14:22-16:13). The guys then discuss the different theories of atonement and how to frame the question of atonement theory as it relates to the gospel (16:14-23:59), and jump into a conversation about whether or not Jesus "preached the gospel" (24:00-29:42). They then take a brief moment to provide help for the listener in digesting this information (29:43-31:06), followed by a user question about the sinner's prayer, coupled with effective ways to preach the gospel (31:07-38:24). Next they talk about the plan of salvation, leading into a discussion of the compelling nature of the gospel (38:25-41:11), and how to go about responding to the gospel in our lives (41:12-42:10). They finish on a discussion of what it means to say "I got saved" and what exactly it is that we are saved from (42:11-44:30), followed by how we can effectively preach the gospel in our lives (44:31-49:08), and concluding with a summary of the conversation and what we would say is the summary of the gospel (49:09-51:22).
