Processed and prepared foods tend to have higher levels of toxic chemicals than whole foods. These foods may contain preservatives and other additives that could be harmful to your health. Plus, processing foods increases the risk of contamination of heavy metals or petroleum-based compounds from machines and lubricants. Lastly, many of these foods travel long distances in plastic packaging. Everything from hot trucks in transit to improper storage at grocery stores can cause these plastic chemicals to leach into foods.

That’s why we recommend people eat as many locally-sourced, whole foods as possible. While shopping for produce locally has become increasingly common, shopping for meat still has a long way to go. Sourcing local meat isn’t as second nature for humans today as it was for our ancestors.

That’s why we’re so glad to chat on IG Live with Emily Niswanger. Emily is an Integrative and Functional Nutrition Dietitian from Minnesota.

During the Live, we’re going to discuss how shopping locally helps with sustainability, what to look for when trying to buy different types of meat locally, and some tips for meal prepping.
