Stop Should-ing Yourself
Manage episode 383765097 series 3454019
How many times do you catch yourself saying the word 'should' in your self-talk?
I should go on a diet.
I should move closer to my family.
I should (not) look for a new job.
Should is a tricky word because it is often a directive that comes from somewhere outside of ourselves and clashes with our internal desires. This leaves us with feelings of guilt and frustration and second-guessing ourselves.
Shoulds come to us through our family's expectations, our education and upbringing, what society tells us, and how we interpret our world, and oftentimes, we have no say in them. We just blindly accept the shoulds and act accordingly, even if we don't like it.
Listen to this week's episode to learn more about this word 'should' and seven other words you can use instead of 'should' that honor your own ability to choose and make decisions in your best interest.
